The Pirates' hit machine, Freddy Sanchez, led off the top of the eighth with a single off Adam Pettyjohn and was taken out for a pinch-hitter.
Sanchez has yet to take the field this spring, but Russell professes to be unconcerned that his throwing program is on pace and he'll be at second base soon.
It's a good thing these games use a designated hitter.
I try to pick up media guides here and there and was happy to see Al Kaline on the cover of the Tigers' book. He played his entire career in Detroit and was rewarded with a World Series victory in 1968.
Of course, that's the year Denny McLain won 31 games, which probably will never happen again. Denny made a mess of things after that, but you can't take that magical season away from him.
Heads-up base-running by Luis Cruz, who scores on a ground out, makes it 12-8, Buccos.
