Pirates at Phillies, 5th inning

Phillies second baseman Chase Utley flat out boots Kevin Thompson's roller and they rule it a hit. Gimme a break, no error because he's Chase Utley. No matter, because the Pirates just aren't hitting today.

Pirates reliever Casey Fossum gets a bad break when Pedro Feliz swings hard and hits a slow roller for an infield single. Fossum -- a 6-foot-1, 160-pounder who might pass for Ichabod Crane from a distance -- winds up giving up three runs, but perhaps the ex-Rays hurler gets some satisfaction by picking Eric Bruntlett off first base after the latter's two-run single.

The crowd seems oddly detached, as if the heat is reminding them what it's going to be like the next six months.
