When Zach Duke is announced in the press box as the next Pirates pitcher, a wag bellows "Haven't we suffered enough?"
Duke, a presumptive Pittsburgh starter, gave up home runs Saturday to Reds sluggers Ken Griffey Jr. and Adam Dunn. Those guys can take it out against anyone, but Duke wants to rebound strong. He just got off to a good start by striking Vernon Wells out looking.
Next time you're at a game, close your eyes and try to imagine what just happened from the crowd noise. That's what my buddy Enrique, a blind announcer for the Rays, does to call games. I did a story on him years ago when he was announcing for Florida College in Temple Terrace.
Duke has a 1-2-3 inning. Apparently, he wants to help end the suffering of long-time Pirates fans.
