Similar to their counterparts, Pirate hitters will face a new pitcher - Scott Munter.
Ronny Paulino stands in. A catcher, he is the DH today, giving the Pirates a chance to play Paulino and back-up Ryan Doumit. It makes sense this early in the spring - starting pitchers rarely go more than an inning or two, so they wouldn't get a chance to hit anyway, and this gives another guy a shot to get some at-bats.
The Pirates are the eighth organization for infielder Chris Gomez, who lofts a soft single to right field, pushing Steven Pearce to third.
But Kevin Thompson grounds into a bat-splintering 6-4-3 double play, ending the inning.
0-0 after two.
