I'm new to this blogging stuff. But it's pretty fun.
You know, I never played the game (except for the sandlot), but I've followed it since Curt Gowdy and Tony Kubek brought the Game of the Week into American homes Saturday afternoons more than 40 years ago.
So let me know what you think about what I think and who your heroes were growing up.
Toronto shortstop Joe Inglett flat-out booted a grounder by Steve Pearce, and Machi finds himself in a pickle as he works for the save.
Mientkiewicz up -- a distant chant of "Let's go Doug," "Let's go Doug."
Inspired, he singles up the middle and Luis Cruz will run.
Kevin Thompson squares to bunt and is hit by a pitch, loading the bases.
Can you feel what makes this game so great?
Pirates reserve shortstop Brian Bixler is likely staring at another season at Triple-A Indianapolis, but on this day he has a chance to be a major league hero. Machi needs a double-play grounder in the worst way.
Bixler has worked the count full.
He fouls one off his instep.
Can you feel the drama building?
Well, a sacrifice fly to right is not bad; it's 7-6, and pinch-runner Cruz moved to third.
Here's Velandia, who has hit the ball hard every time today.
Shouldn't Thompson try to steal to get out of the double-play possibility?
He gets down to second anyway on a wild pitch.
And now it's a 3-2 count. And Velandia walks on a pitch just off the corner.
So now, it's the ice-cold McCutchen with a chance at a game-winning hit. His speed makes him the unlikeliest of double-play candidates.
Freddy Sanchez is on deck.
And there's a line drive into left field, base hit! Cruz scores! Here comes Thompson! And the throw from left field is not in time!
Pirates win 8-7 on McCutchen's two-run single, ending a six-game losing streak!
Editor's note: We are not making this up.
