I didn't detect any great urgency in the Pirates' clubhouse today, despite the six-game losing streak. First-year manager John Russell seems unconcerned with wins and losses, as long as everyone gets their work in and pays attention to detail.
Dustin McGowan, the Blue Jays starter, began his professional career with Medicine Hat of the Pioneer League. He was 12-10 last year for Toronto with a 4.08 ERA, decent stats in the American League.
Did I mention how desperate the Pirates are for a victory? They've manufactured a run after McGowan hit Nyjer Morgan with a pitch. Morgan stole second easily and DH Freddy Sanchez lined an opposite-field single to right for a 1-0 lead.
Sanchez stole second on a weak throw by Sal Fasano. McGowan has switched into bear-down mode, but it looks to me like Ryan Doumit is waiting on something sweet.
He was, but couldn't catch up to a 3-2 McGowan heater. That mano-a-mano stuff is what makes this game great.
This time, the mano is Steve Pearce. The Pirates first baseman hit the first pitch from McGowan over the left-field wall for a 3-0 lead and his third home run of the spring.
Did you know that in 50 percent of major league games, the winning team scores more runs in one inning than the losers score in the game? The Buccos have jumped to a 3-0 lead, so we'll see if that holds up.
