This is Pirates pitcher John Van Benschoten's second appearance this spring. Although he pitched well last season with Triple-A Indianapolis, his time in Pittsburgh was a nightmare, going 0-7 with a 10.15 ERA.
The former first-round selection missed all of 2005 recovering from right shoulder surgery and has yet to put everything together, although he was 10-7 with Indy.
Scott Hatteberg singled and Van Benschoten walked Ken Griffey Jr. The wind, which is gusting up to 30 miles per hour, is blowing slightly in and from right to left. Great sailboat weather if you know how to hoist a spinnaker.
The key for hitters today is getting it up in the jet stream, and that's what Brandon Phillips just did. Jason Bay could only watch as Phillips' drive sailed over the Sarasota Kennel Club sign in left for a three-run homer and a 3-0 Cincy lead after one.
