Bottom 5 - Yankees at Pirates

Hughes started the fifth, but after allowing a hard single to Jason Bay, the Yanks came and got their young righty. Enter Billy Traber, a much traveled lefty, who has spent time with the Mets and Indians among others. He was with Washington last year. Traber was once involved in big trade, if memory serves, and I'm going to do a little digging to see what that trade was.

With my compliments to Baseball-Reference, here is the trade I was talking about: "December 13, 2001: Sent by the New York Mets to the Cleveland Indians to complete an earlier deal made on December 11, 2001. The New York Mets sent players to be named later, Matt Lawton, Alex Escobar, and Jerrod Riggan to the Cleveland Indians for Roberto Alomar, Mike Bacsik, and Danny Peoples (minors). The New York Mets sent Earl Snyder (December 13, 2001) and Billy Traber (December 13, 2001) to the Cleveland Indians to complete the trade."

Traber is greeted by a Adam LaRoche single. Then A-Rod on double-play ball threw wildly to second base and Bay scored. A-Rod shook his head as LaRoche moved third and Ryan Doumit remained at first with no one out. We have a one-run ball-game, and the Pirates fans are going wild. Or maybe that's Yanks fans jeering A-Rod, the favorite son.
Billy Traber has thrown over a bunch of times, to the disapproval of Yanks fans. He was so worried about Ryan Doumit (yes, Doumit) that he forgot about the batter, Nady, who he walked to load the bases.
Chris Gomez hit into a double play to tie the score. Then a wild pitch as Doumit scored to put the Pirates in the lead. You can never count these fightin' Pirates out.

Pirates 9, Yankees 8
