Can't help myself -- when they start substituting en masse in spring training, my mind wanders.
Back in 1975, I went to every spring training game at Al Lang in St. Petersburg. Both the Mets and Cardinals trained there, so I got to between 25-30 games.
I'd get out of school at noon thanks to split sessions, hop the bus and get to the game well before the first pitch.
Well, this one day I was dying to see Juan Marichal, who was nearing the end of his career in a Dodgers uniform. I was going to get his autograph, tell him he'd always been my favorite player and empathize with him over the John Roseboro incident.
And on this particular day, I COULD NOT FIND THE 50-CENT BUS FARE! (And you thought our current economy was down the drain.)
"I've never met the Dominican Dandy, who was the equal of Koufax and Gibson throughout the 1960s but never won a World Series. So if you read this, sir, blog me back.

Zach Duke is highly energized today. He's sprinting in the outfield, working on the foundation everyone in Pittsburgh hopes will make him a quality starter.
If you're looking for a good baseball read, check out "Ty and the Babe." It's about Cobb and Ruth's rivalry as players, how their relationship softened in later years and recounts a series of golf matches they staged after retirement.
I learned a lot of things about both guys I hadn't read before.
Barthmaier finally got out of the inning, and it's 7-5 Canadians.
